We’ve posted articles in the past that have been about types of firearms to carry, calibers of firearms to carry, other tools you may need, and posts about not even needing to carry a gun to understand and support the 2nd Amendment. As is true with any subject, it’s difficult to write an article while remembering not everyone is as passionate about the topic as the author, and others still may downright disagree. Keeping that in mind, I’d like to take a moment to mention five reasons why I personally choose to carry and why I don’t mind other folks carrying as well.
1- As the head of my household, I am intrinsically responsible for the safety of my family.
I am the proud husband of a beautiful, Godly woman who takes fantastic care of my two crazy little boys. I enjoy the highlights of my work throughout the week, but in the back of my head I’m always thinking about getting home to them and what I’ll be doing with them next. They are undoubtedly the most important people in my life, and most of what I do on my own time revolves around their well-being. In the same way my wife wouldn’t dream of leaving a poisonous cleaning substance within reach of the boys because, “Hey, if they drink half a bottle, I can just call poison control!” I am not pleased with the option of, “If someone attacks my family, I’ll just call the cops real quick!” Neither of those expressions shows either good judgment or acceptance of responsibility.
2-No private citizen is entitled to police protection.
When it seems like those irrational power mongers who have bought their way to the top can’t make a more ridiculous decision, they usually do. The President, a man guarded personally by dozens of highly trained and armed men, has chosen to spend bookoo bucks on disarming you and me. Yea, ok. The NYC police commissioner wants to take guns from those who walk past dark alleys every day, but wants those same people to pay for his security detail because he’s more important than them. Because the police departments aren’t called until after an incident, I choose to stay alive and answer some questions.
3-I do it because it’s MY RIGHT.
No one “allows” me to carry my guns. No one grants me permission to defend my loved ones and myself. One of the first steps to securing a dictatorship is the guise of benevolence. An individual saying that I’m permitted to carry a gun implies he has the authority to deny me my right to survive and inherent right to life itself. I am a concealed carry permit holder, but I also acknowledge that there may come a time when excessive and unjust laws may complicate that issue.
4-All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
This point is a little harder to tack down. It’s difficult in today’s day and age to separate criminal from victim. If I walk up and see two guys throwing down to the point of life or death, there are many variables I may not be aware of. Maybe the guy on top didn’t start the fight. Maybe he was attacked by Guy #2 and just got in to a good position to get out of there. I may not know right now what I’ll do in every situation I’m faced with, but I do know I try to be one of the good guys and I won’t do nothing!
5-I’ve seen what disarmed societies look like.
Whether we’re talking about Afghan villages or Nazi Germany, the proof is in the pudding when it comes to firepower being the final word. Small well-armed groups ride rough shod over families that literally live in fortresses in Afghanistan. Those compound walls that are built around the dwellings there can take shaped charges without giving way, and yet are breached and pillaged nightly because it’s just the bad guys that have the weapons. While you hopefully won’t need that combat rifle on a day-to-day basis, having a handgun on you provides you the chance to fight to that rifle when you do need it.
There are many factors to consider when deciding whether or not you will arm yourself. If you have anything to contribute or care to tell us about why you carry, please feel free to comment below. I’m sure this post could go on for quite a bit longer, but I believe it will suffice to get those pondering juices pumping. Remember, these are the reasons I choose to carry a handgun on a daily basis. It’s a very personal topic, and should be taken seriously. As long as you’re thinking about it and praying about it we’re headed in the right direction.
