A Strength for Surviving

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Life is full of ups and downs.  There are mountain top experiences and deep valley expeditions.  Some successes and some significant failures.  Some could be burdensome, but each is a blessing.  Gandhi said, “My imperfections and failures are as much a blessing from God as my successes and my talents and I lay them both at his feet.”

The psalmist gives us some insightful instruction that in our failures, faith can be found.  Matthew Henry writes, “God would not suffer His people to be tempted, if His grace were not sufficient, not only to save them from harm, but to make them gainers by it.”  In our losing, we can learn . . . in our grief, we can gain.

Our Problem.  Here’s a reality check . . . in difficulty and disasters, our determination and desire may not be enough.  It’s inevitable.  We are battle worn and battle weary.  The enemy steals our energy.  No matter what we try, we still tire.  Paul reminds us of the challenges we encounter, “We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.” (2 Cor 4:8-9 NLT).  Each day may be a struggle . . . but, there is a solution.  In every hardship, there is hope.  Find the solution and focus on your hope.

Our Power.  The psalmist reminds us that “God is the strength of [our] heart“.  When we give Him our mistakes, He makes them His masterpiece.  He is able to turn our oversights into opportunities.  The psalmist acknowledges, “God arms me with strength, and He makes my way perfect.” (Ps 18:32 NLT). God longs for us to accept our weakness so He can do His work.  Spurgeon writes, “That which man doth, unaided by divine strength, God can never own.”  Let God own it . . . all of it . . . the good, bad and the ugly.  When our heart is suffering, He becomes our source, our strength and our stamina.

Our Portion.  God is our security.  He is our promise.  Jeremiah tells us, “The LORD is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in Him! The LORD is good to those who depend on Him, to those who search for Him. So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the LORD.” (Lam 3:24-26 NLT). We hope . . . we depend . . . we wait.  The psalmist reminds us, “LORD, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing. You guard all that is mine.” (Ps 16:5 NLT). He is able to keep all that we committed to Him.

The psalmist decided a direction that would deliver him from any despair.  He reminds us, “But as for me, how good it is to be near God! I have made the Sovereign LORD my shelter, and I will tell everyone about the wonderful things you do.” (Ps 73:28 NLT)

It is good to be near God.  The Sovereign is our shelter.  We find peace in God’s presence.

He is our solution, our strength and our security.  May our surrender be today’s defining moment.
