“When he calls to Me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him My salvation.”
Psalm 91:15-16 ESV
According to one source, Holy Scripture contains over 3,500 promises of God. All require our faith. All are factual. And, all are fulfilled.
The promise of His safety, His shelter and the security under the shadow of His wing is solidified by our Sovereign Savior. As we reside with Him, we rest in Him. The psalmist reminds us that our purposeful passion and pursuit of God protects us in His presence. And, it’s in His presence that we find His peace.
He Is Our Dwelling Place. The psalmist writes, “Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” (Ps 91:1 NLT) Our desire is to dwell with Him. We are intentional . . . we are insistent . . . and, we are intimate. In her collection, “Bible Hours”, Mary B. M. Duncan writes, “What intimate and unrestrained communion. The Christian makes known his heart, with its needs and wishes, its thoughts and feelings, its doubts and anxieties, its sorrows and its joys, to God, as to a loving, perfect friend. This Almighty Friend has admitted His chosen one to His ‘secret place'” It is almost too wonderful to be true. It is almost too presumptuous a thought for such creatures as we are to entertain. But God, Himself permits it, desires it, teaches us to realize that it is communion to which He calls us.”
He is Our Deliverer. We are encouraged, “For He will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with His feathers. He will shelter you with His wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.” (Ps 91:3-4 NLT) Helpless, hopeless and hurting . . . we need His help, His hope and His healing. He is the Salvation to our slavery. Puritan Thomas Watson reminds us, “Christ’s wings are both for healing and for hiding, for curing and securing us; the devil and his instruments would soon devour the servants of God, if He did not set an invincible guard about them, and cover them with the golden feathers of His protection.”
He Is Our Defender. “‘Because he loves me,’ says the Lord, ‘I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges My name.'” (Ps 91:14 NIV) Our proclaimed passion for God reveals His provision and protection. Spurgeon writes, “When the heart is enamoured of the Lord, all taken up with Him, and intensely attached to Him, the Lord will recognize the sacred flame, and preserve the man who bears it in his bosom. It is love – love set upon God, which is the distinguishing mark of those whom the Lord secures.”
Living in the “shelter and shadow” of Almighty God provides us with one of His many great promises, “When he calls to Me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.” (Ps 91:15 ESV)
Call to Him at anytime . . . He is always there!
