Thrive to Survive

So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. 1 Peter 1:6 NLT   There’s a word in this verse that is challenging . . . the word “must”.  Peter tells us that we “must endure many trials for a little while”.  Why?  Elizabeth […]

Lead With Your Ears

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. James 1:19 NLT Ever wondered why one mouth is twice as hurtful as two ears are helpful? One mouth . . . two ears . . . yet, most only listen half as […]

Give Grace

See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and to all people. 1 Thessalonians 5:15 NLT The teaching of Jesus pierced through the darkness of pious religious tradition and political revenging tyranny. The Jews promoted guilt and piety, while the Romans perfected guile and politics. […]

There Is A Safe Place

“O my people, trust in Him at all times. Pour out your heart to Him, for God is our refuge. Selah” – Psalms 62:8 NLT   It’s often easier to commune with God in the calmness of the morning, as opposed to calling out to Him in the chaos of the day.  As each day begins […]

He Never Lets Go

I cried out, “I am slipping!” but Your unfailing love, O Lord, supported me. When doubts filled my mind, Your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer. Psalms 94:18-19 NLT   There are days when every step taken is on a slippery slope.  Footing is uncertain and unstable.  There are no places to grab a […]

It’s All Good

As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. Genesis 50:20 ESV   Trusting God is sometimes hard . . . trusting people who are “God’s messengers” in our lives . . . that’s another […]

It’s All About the Joy

This is the day the lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalms 118:24 NLT   George Willis Cook wrote a song in the 1920’s that has stood the course of time.  Once you start singing it, it’s hard to stop.  It goes like this, “I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, […]

Trying To Trust

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.”  – Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT   Line them all up . . . and I’ve made more mistakes than milestones.  We all mess up.  It […]

God’s Time is Not the Same as My Time

“How can someone like me, your servant, talk to You, my Lord? My strength is gone, and I can hardly breathe.” – Daniel 10:17 NLT   Have you been to the place where crying out to God becomes so hard, so exhausting and so silent that you want to quit?  Praying . . . fasting […]

The Power of Change

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. Acts 4:13 ESV   Peter and John were both fisherman by trade.  They came from a small city that had little economic or cultural significance. […]

He Can Handle This

In Him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will, in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of His glory. Ephesians 1:11-12 NIV During a troubling time, […]

Take a Break

I will fully satisfy the needs of those who are weary and fully refresh the souls of those who are faint. Jeremiah 31:25 NET   Weary.  Worn out?  Whipped?   We are always on the go . . . always working . . . always connected.  We have given the nod to the novel notion […]

Being Right or Doing Right.

And this righteousness will bring peace. Yes, it will bring quietness and confidence forever. Isaiah 32:17 NLT It’s easier to raise a generation to believe that righteousness or right living is founded on what we do, instead of who we are. Righteousness based on what we do becomes rule driven and unwelcoming.  Righteousness based in […]

Giving the Right Stuff

Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom He gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.
