If you look for Me wholeheartedly, you will find Me.
Jeremiah 29:13 NLT
Every day we encounter unanticipated changes, unexpected challenges and unwanted choices. These detours in our schedules can alter our path . . . these distractions to our strategies can affect our purpose.
God’s indwelling Spirit gives a voice and vision to guide our direction and destiny. At times, His voice is still and small. During a time of discouragement and despair, the prophet Elijah experienced this expression of God. It’s recorded, “And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.” (1 Kings 19:12 NLT). Often the fullest of vision is revealed in the faintness of God’s voice . . . strong, but soft . . . significant, but still.
And, sometimes His voice is full of power and purpose. The psalmist writes, “The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded amid the hail and burning coals.” (Ps 18:13 NLT). Whether strong or soft . . . thundering or tender . . . He speaks and we listen.
He Speaks To Us Continually. God shows us His gifts and glory though His written word, through a still small voice, through the beauty of nature, through the voice of wise counsel, through the confirmation of His Spirit . . . God is always whispering His will and His wisdom. The writer of Hebrews reminds us of the vibrancy of His voice, “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God . . .” (Heb 4:12-13 NLT)
He Speaks To Us Compassionately. The prophet Jeremiah shares God’s loving and sovereign care, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ says the LORD. ‘They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.'” (Jer 29:11 NLT). All that we need to hear, He tells us. His care and compassion are complete and lack nothing. No matter pleasure or pain . . . comfort or challenge . . . His love is always on His lips. C. S. Lewis writes, “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”
He Speaks To Us Confidently. We are His sheep and He knows us. Jesus tells us, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27 NLT). He speaks to us knowing that when we listen we have an abundant life . . . when we follow, we walk by faith . . . and, our walk of faith pleases Him. Even in our chaos, He speaks calm. Matthew reminds us of Jesus stopping the storms, “Jesus responded, ‘Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!’ Then He got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm.” (Matt 8:26 NLT)
Musical artist, Mandisa recorded the following lyrics,
“Who knows how He’ll get a hold of us,
Get our attention to prove He is enough.
Who knows how He’ll get a hold of you,
Get your attention to prove He is enough.
He’ll do and He’ll use whatever He wants to
To tell us ‘I love you’.
God is speaking ‘I love you’.”
We have a path to consider . . . that’s to seek Him.
We have a promise to claim . . . that’s to find Him.
Decide to follow Him. Determine to discover Him.
