Learning From Listening

“For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”

It’s been said that history is His Story.  God uses the lessons learned by others to teach and guide us in our own lives.  His story tells us a His truth.

An insightful mentor once told me, “Wise men learn from the mistakes of others, smart men learn from their own and foolish men never learn”.  We are reminded that “whatever was written in former days” was written for our benefit and blessing.  The words of learning become words of life.

Words To Educate.  Paul reminds us that “Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way.” (2 Tim 3:16 MSG)  The apostle tells us, “God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” (2 Tim 3:17 NLT)  God’s word is more than a history book or a collection of literary poems, parables or proverbs . . . It is a life-giving, life-changing and life-challenging insights from the heart and hand of God.

Words For Endurance. God’s principles are the seeds of potential and powerful promises. Paul writes, “We also pray that you will be strengthened with all His glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy,” (Col 1:11 NLT). God’s insights deepen our faith and trust.  His truth provides a tether for our trials.  James writes, “For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.” (James 1:3-4 NLT)

Words To Encourage.  God’s word gives us hope and help.  It creates purpose and confirms promises.  It soothes and strengthens.  It edifies and encourages.  Peter reminds us, “. . . My purpose in writing is to encourage you and assure you that what you are experiencing is truly part of God’s grace for you. Stand firm in this grace.”  (1 Pet 5:12 NLT) what god says, He will do.  Packer writes, “The stars may fail, but God’s promises will stand and be fulfilled.”

George Mueller, a man of unshakable faith wrote, “Be assured, if you walk with Him and look to Him, and expect help from Him, He will never fail you.”  God’s word gives us endurance and encouragement . . . Take hold of His Truth.
