No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
Romans 8:37 NLT
Lopsided Victories. Some use the term, “blowout”. It’s when one opponent so overwhelms the other that victory is not only anticipated, but amazing.
One of sports truly overwhelming teams was the 1901 Michigan Wolverines Football team. Impressive enough are wins of 128-0, 89-0 and no victory less than 21 points. Even more astonishing is that the team didn’t let an opponent score a single point the entire season . . . they outscored other teams 550 to 0.
Paul reminds the Christ followers in Rome that they were more than conquerors through the One who loved them. We also have the promise of overwhelming power and victory. It’s not dependent on our strength or skills, but on His sacrificial love.
Overwhelming Victory Over Sin. Jesus shed His precious blood to pay the penalty for yesterday’s, today’s and tomorrow’s sin. His resurrection from death gives us the power to live in victory over sin. Paul writes, “When he died, he died once to break the power of sin. But now that he lives, he lives for the glory of God.” (Rom 6:10 NLT). We are longer confined by sin’s chains. The apostle continues, “Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.” (Rom 6:14 NLT). Our victory is overwhelming and His grace is great.
Overwhelming Victory In Suffering. Suffering is part of life. Suffering is not terminal, but temporary. In our grief, God gives us grace. Peter reminds us, “And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” (1 Pet 5:10 ESV). In his own life, Paul faced debilitating suffering. His surrender to God’s sufficiency was his victorious solution, “For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Cor 12:10 ESV)
Overwhelming Victory Is Secure. Our destiny is dependable. Paul emphatically states, “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom 8:38-39 NLT). There is not a think-so assumption, but a know-so affirmation. Our victory is secure.
Charles Naylor wrote the following lyrics in the early 1900’s,
“On the winning side, I’m on the winning side, I’m on the winning side with Jesus;
Though hot may be the fray, my soul can boldly say, I’m on the winning side with Jesus.”
Through our oppositions and obstacles, we have the overwhelming victory in Jesus. He has made us more than conquerors. Be defined by your boldness.
Be defined by your bravery. Be defined by your victory.
