Some Things Never Change

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”

Life is full of change.  It happens.  We live in a time of endless options . . . options that create opportunities or obstacles.

We face uncertain, unpredictable and unknown challenges in every moment.  Schedules shift.  Priorities are pushed.  Calendars change.   The unexpected is now the expected.

John Maxwell has been quoted, “Change is inevitable, growth is optional.”  Although unsettling, there are times when adversity requires us to adapt and adjust in order advance in our walk.  With change, we usually encounter two options:  escape or embrace.  One is based on fear.  The other one faith.

Change may be inevitable, but Christ is immovable.  When times seem uncertain, He is certain.  Jesus is the same . . . unchanging . . . yesterday, today and forever.

His compassion never changes.  Paul was certain . . . he was overwhelmingly convinced . . . of God’s commitment.  During times of immense uncertainty, he writes to the followers in Rome, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? . . . For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord”. (Rom 8:35, 38-39 NIV)

His care never changes.  His care for us is consistent.  It’s never altered by circumstances or convenience.  James writes, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” (Jam 1:17 NIV)

His commitment never changes. In a time of loss and loneliness, Jeremiah tells us, “The thought of my suffering and homelessness is bitter beyond words. I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss. Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning.” (Lam 3:19-23 NLT). The prophet tells us his summary, “For no one is abandoned by the Lord forever.” (Lam 3:31 NLT)  God’s commitment to us never ends.

His conduct never changes.  Balaam was a messenger of God who delivered a meaningful message of God’s character.  He says to King Balak, “God is not human, that He should lie, not a human being, that He should change his mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?” (Numb 23:19 NIV). What God says, He will do.

He is the Anchor in your storm.  He is the Rock that will never be moved.  He is your Firm Foundation.  He is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning . . . the middle . . . and, the end.

Paul reminds us to be unwavering in our walk.  He writes, “So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.” (1 Cor 15:58 NLT)

Two options . . .

Escape the change in fear because today is uncertain?

Embrace the change in faith because He is unchangeable?

The writer of Hebrews tells us, “And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to Him must believe that God exists and that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him.” (Heb 11:6 NLT)

He is with you.  He will never leave you.  He is your God.

“For this God is our God for ever and ever; He will be our guide even to the end.” (Ps 48:14 NIV)
