“God arms me with strength, and He makes my way perfect.”
– Psalms 18:32
There are a lot of days when my way seems imperfect. It feels like the “UN-life” . . . unmet expectations, unfulfilled dreams, unresolved issues and unpaid bills. Any hope is consumed by overwhelming hopelessness and any faith is corrupted by overshadowing fear.
God reaches down when we are battered, beaten and broken and renews with the blessings of His presence, His peace and His promises. Paul encourages us with his writing to the Christ-followers in Philippi, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” (Phil 1:6).
He hasn’t quit. He hasn’t given up. He’s not done.
When I Am Weak, He Gives Strength. The psalmist is confident, “God arms me with strength“. In our weaknesses, He is always there with power that is perfectly portioned to our pain. Through his own pain, Paul gives us purpose, “. . . I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud. Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time He said, ‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.’ So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me”. (2 Cor 12:7-9). Paul also reminded those in Philippi, “I can do all things through Christ, Who empowers me.” (Phil 4:13)
When I Am Weary, He Gives Rest. The prophet, Jerimiah declares God’s encouraging words to the exhausted nation of Israel . . . “For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.” (Jer 31:25) He refreshes and replenishes. He fills in and fills up. He satisfies the faint and strengthens the failing. In our exhaustion, He wants us to embrace Him. Jesus tells us, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matt 11:28)
When I Am Worn Out, He Gives Renewal. God’s brings rejuvenation and restoration through worship and His word. Solomon writes, “My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body.” (Prov 4:20-22) Never lose sight of God’s promises and let them drill down into the depths of your heart. Moses reminds us, “Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.” (Duet 6:6-7)
Our God is faithful. These lyrics from Matt Redman’s “Never Once” remind us that God is making our way perfect . . .
Standing on this mountaintop,
Looking just how far we’ve come,
Knowing that for every step,
You were with us.
Kneeling on this battle ground,
Seeing just how much You’ve done,
Knowing every victory,
Was Your power in us.
Scars and struggles on the way
But with joy our hearts can say,
Yes, our hearts can say . . .
Never once did we ever walk alone.
Never once did You leave us on our own.
You are faithful, God, You are faithful.
He hasn’t quit . . . He won’t quit . . . He will always be there for you.
